Whats an easier way to give an IM injection to a dog2007-11-25 2:53:51

I will offer this bit of advice. She is going to "feed" off of your nervousness/anxiety at the idea of doing the shots to her. It actually may be "hurting " you more than it does her. Dogs can read our emotions!! So the hardest part is for you to adjust your emotions over the shots and try to be as calm and matter of fact as is possible for the injection. Vary the sight of shots per the vet. Ask if applying ice to numb the area is ok prior to injection.

We have not had a dog needing ongoing IM shots so not expert on this. Do what is needed to make the routine as "forgettable" as possible. I'm sure you do the treat thing afterwards but think of other activities/things she looks forward to as a distraction before and after. Make sure you massage the injection site after. Do ask about the ice.

So sorry she has to go thru this but try not to let your emotions show! Hard to do.

Read the links they mention, check with the vet (the stuff might burn or be a large amount, so sedative may help) and move that injection site around!

Also, how are YOU handling it? Don't underestimate your dog's sensitivity to you. They love you and trust you. If you are scared or worried, they will sense it. If you are confident and professional, they will sense that, too.

If you are stressing, ask for assistance from a friend, vet tech, etc., who is comfortable with the injection. They can help you as you learn how to give an injection (many folks practice on oranges), and build your own confidence.
