Whats happening my dog is in season at 5 months2007-11-25 2:53:53

However I wouldn't consider having a puppy of that age neutered, You can always have further seasons chemically suppressed until she is old enough, say after 12 months to spay, discuss the options with your vet

we recommendthat you have a ***** spayed 3 months after there first season - or 3 months after any season.

5 months is a little early - usually between 6-12 months for the first season.

But like you say - you aren't sure on age -

If you are at all concerned - get her checked out by your vet

Yeah - although 5 months is earlier than usual, it is possible - my friends mastiff came into season at 5 months too. Her litter mate, now over 1yr still hasn't ! It reallly varies from dog to dog.

Your vet probably wants to wait until she has physically matured a bit more before carrying out this very invasive op.

I agree that it's not unheard for your GSD to go into heat at 5 months. Do you have papers on her. The "breeder" would have to KNOW when she was born before providing you with the info to get her AKC registered. But if not, I have a GSD and she didn't come into heat until 10 months, and I highly recommend, despite what some 22 year old says, she should go through her first heat prior to spaying. It allows hormonal balance. If you have her spayed during heat, it will cost a lot more due to the excessive bleeding during the operation.
