Whats the best ground cover for a small, high use dog bathroom area
I live in a ground floor condo with a large breed dog. The paved patio has a small garden area that she uses to go to the washroom. It is dirt with some shrubs and held together with landscape ties. Any suggestions on an appropriate ground cover for this area? Grass is not an option as the area is damp with no direct sunlight. In fact, I don't think a plant of any kind is appropriate for this area. I was thinking something like gravel, bark mulch, or just dirt. And my biggest concerns are cleanliness and odour.
Answers:Sand would be a good option. It will be easy to clean up their messes from sand - water filters through sand - it is inexpensive and easy to replace as necessary - and generally, dogs like to use sandy areas as potty areas.
Hope this helps.

Since you have a large breed dog then I would not suggest rocks of any kind. They tend to see them as toys and will try to eat them and then you have problems. Same with any kind of mulch it will hold the urine smell in the bark. Look into more pavers and then get some kennel spray to keep the area odor free. You can find the kennel spray at any good pet store or even Home Dept carries it. Also Agways.
I would discourage rocks, gravel, bark, etc because it's very hard to keep that stuff clean. Check with a local nursery about different types of grass, because some of the stuff they use in parks is always in the shade and stays wet. If there isn't anything like that which will work for you then dirt is the next best option.
