Whats the best way to house train a 4 month old puppy2007-11-25 2:54:34

My 9 year old son just brought her home 2 days ago. She's a small dog, half Datson & half Chuahwha. She's quite nervous, and she whines alot. We don't have a fenced yard, and she is affraid of the leash. When we bring her outside, she tries to hide or just stays at the door. Help!!

When I house trained our, now three year old, I took her outside every 30 minutes, told her to "go potty", praised her like crazy ("Good Girl!") and gave her a treat. I used Tiny Tots Jerky treats by Solid Gold because they are small and soft.

If she started to go on the floor, I would say "no" firmly, pick her up and take her outside.

As far as her being nervous, it's only been two days so she is still getting used to her surroundings.

As for the leash, try putting it on her and letting her walk around with it just dragging behind her while you are home so you can watch so she doesn't get snagged on anything.

Well she will get used to the leash soon enough and do not under any circumstances put down newspapers or puppy pads. That is very confusing to a dog. Typically, a dog will go to the bathroom about 10 minutes after they eat.

Well you can buy the doggy pee pee pads. You should buy her a bed and put stuff animals so she could feel more secure. I read this in a dog book. Play with her this will make her happier and she will feel at home. There are a lot of small dogs that dont like going outside. I have a 3 year old chow mix i got her from the shelter and i would take her out but she didnt like getting off the car, and she really didnt like going inside stores. But i talked to a trainer and she told me that i have to make it a routine so they can feel better.
