Whats the best way to treat my dogs allergy to grass2007-11-25 2:54:35

My daughter's keeps her dog inside 24/7 at her home. My wife and I pick up the dog on the weekends and bring it home where it runs outside. Whenever she comes inside, she spends the first 5-10 minutes dragging her rear end on the ground and itching with her paws. She frequently yelps in pain when doing this. Once it stops, she's ok until she has to go out again. It breaks my heart to see her like this. Can you give dog's allergy medication like Benadryl, or do we have to go to a vet? Is there any other kind of treatment for her?

Check with the vet - you can give a dog benadryl for grass allergies but the dose is based on weight. Also frequent baths to get the grass pollen out will help.

Are you 100% sure it's a grass allergy? A check with the vet may be in order. Also, are there any chemicals on the lawn that might cause it? The scooting on the rear end almost sounds like impacted anal glands but that doesn't fit with the paw itching.

She may have an issue that can be fixed by taking her to a groomer and ask to have her glands done (it's a nicer way of saying it for those who may be uncomfortable with the concept.) This is more common with smaller dogs and dogs that are fed lower quality foods.
