Good question! Well, they're obviously very similar in appearence. However, for one thing, the heads are different from eachother. The Lhasa's head is that of a terrier - the dome of the head is flatter and narrow, whereas the Shih Tzu's head is round, broad, and the eyes are far apart.

The ears are also positioned lower on the Lhasa. The Shih Tzu's eyes are more almond in shape, and the Lhasa's are larger and rounder.

Lhasas are typically longer in the body, and the muzzles are known to be more sloped down usually, whereas the Shih Tzu's noses are parallel to the ground and shorter.

The coat of the Shih Tzu is usually a little bit softer, and it usually has a distinctive top knot in shows. The Lhasa traditionally has it's hair parted in the middle.

The main difference is their character, I hear. Lhasas are happy, assertive little dogs that are wary of strangers; whereas the Shih-tzu are outgoing, happy, affectionate, friendly and trusting towards all.

I think they are very similar. I usually notice that Lhasa's have longer bodies & Shih Tzu's come in different colors.

My vet says they share a hip joint that is exclusive to those 2 breeds.
