Whats wrong with my dog2007-11-25 2:53:58

I own a 4 year old male shar pei. he has allergies but when on Prednisone they go away. This year his itching has been really bad. His nipples near his penis are swollen from being the size of a very small eraser to being about the diameter of a nickle anf very puffy. He won;t stop scratching. I feel awful. Any ideas what is wrong with him?

I would really recommend having your vet do some skin cultures. He is already an allergic dog, but it is possible he may have a secondary bacterial or fungal infection that has invaded his skin. If the cultures are negative, I would recommend talking to your vet about seeing a dog allergy specialist, who will do skin prick tests, just like in humans, and will be able to really help determine what he is or isn't allergic to. They are able to make a specific injectable compound which will desensitize your dog to his allergens, and you may even eventually get to take him off of Pred.

He may have some sort of infection. I would get him to a vet and have him checked out.

Benedryl. As your vet how much benedryl you can give to help with the itching.

I would take him to a vet. He could have mange.

Change his diet. Often these problems are related to grains in the diet. Your vet will recommend Science Diet (they all do) because they get their nutrition training from the Science Diet company. He will also tell you that the cause for allergies is meat protein. Again, he got that info from SD.
