Whats wrong with my dogs paw
Sometimes my dog starts licking his right paw constantly, and will give me a warning growl if I touch it like "Sorry mom, but it hurts, and I don't want to bite you".
And I tried pretending to clip his nails with my fingers, so he would get used to it, and when I touched his right paw nails, he'd kinda twitch, but he doesn't care about his left paw!
My dog is 4-5 years old, and he isn't limping with his paw.
I know about the vet, but could anyone tell me whats up with him? We haven't changed his food, and he isn't licking it now, only sometimes for long periods.
Answers:It could be a few things. If it happens from time to time it could be skin allergies. We have a Golden Retriever and he licks his paws and they get irritated and red. We took him to the vet and they said it was allergies. She recommended Benadryl for this and we've used it and it does work. Regular Benadryl 1 or 2 tablets(25mg per tab) (this is the dose for our 80 pound dog). It does make him sleepy but it clears up the redness and makes him stop licking.
Our other dog had a foxtail stuck in his paw. He was licking and licking and we didn't know what it was, but upon closer inspection, we saw a foxtail embedded in his skin between his toes. He was doing the "please don't touch it" growl. We had to take him in to the vet for that.
Carefully inspect his paw (while giving him treats??) and make sure nothing is stuck in it. Look into the Benadryl option if you think it's just irritated from allergies.
