When I go the vet, my dog cant get on the table2007-11-25 2:54:47

My vet doesn't have any stairs to help my older dog get on examining table, ( she weighs 80lbs) is there somewhere I can purchase a portable ramp or stairs to assist her

Answers:

My vet will usually just get on the floor with my elderly dogs. If they must be on the table, he should have a tech help with the lifting and holding the dog there to minimize the risk of a fall/injury. It is really not patient responsibility to provide a service for the vet. I applaud your compassion for your dog!

Some Petsmart or Petco's carry them
Yes, you can buy a ramp at any petstore. The vet techs are trained to pick up large dogs, though, so there shouldn't be a problem. Additionally, the dog does not need ot be on the table to be examined.

Good Luck

Ask them nicely if they have something that could assist you. Also, two people can probably safely get her on the table. I wouldn't buy something specifically for the vet's office, but if you would like to have something on hand--try equipment companies, look for the ramps used on moving trucks. Only a slight incline (if the ramp is long) may help her.
If you do purchase some you ought to offer to let the vet reimburse you and keep them. That is if you don't need them yourself for getting her in and out of the vehicle.
The last few times we took our 80-pound Golden Retriever in to the vet. They examined him on the floor and he's only a year old and healthy. At two different offices. I don't know why they'd make her get on the table. Have you called them to see if they can examine her on the floor?
Can't anybody lift her up there? I'm a vet tech and, if necessary, we get 2 or 3 people to help lift the larger dogs on the table. Usually, with the larger dogs, the vet can do the exam and give shots without putting the dog on the table.
I'm slightly confused. I've worked at a vet clinic for awhile now and we've never needed to exam a large dog on the examination table. The table is just used so that we don't break our backs trying to examine small dogs and other small pets. That's very odd. Is there a specific reason why they needed to examine your dog on the table?
My vet either has assistants lift the dog or else treats the dog on the floor. I've never been expected to get my big dog on the table myself.
My dogs are all over 100#. We never put them on the table. They use the floor. My hounds would probably freak out on stainless steel anyway.
It may be still worth starting to look for a new vet now and use this vet for second opinions when you are not sure about the new vets advice, it does not sound like your vet will be in practice too much longer, so use the time now as a transition period to find a new vet you will be comfortable with , better than waiting right to the end and being stuck with vets you don't trust and having no one to turn to.

I do understand why the vet is asking to put the dog on the table especially with bad back and knees, the joints just don't move the way their supposed to and getting back upright again is even a whole lot tougher than bending and kneeling down, sometime causing you to lose your balance since joints are so weak and you end up sprawled on the floor
