When I spay my female dog, will it calm her down2007-11-25 2:54:47

I've heard it said that when you neuter males dogs, it tends to calm them down. Is the same true for females?

it didn't for my female dog. she is 8 months old and about a week after she was spayed, she was back to normal.

The reason it calms males down is it removes all that testosterone that can lead to hyperactivity, aggressiveness, and wandering. Female hormones don't affect a dog that way, so spaying typically has no effect on the temperament or activity level of the dog. However, fixing your pet is ALWAYS a good idea if you are not a professional breeder.

This is mostly a myth. Any bad behavior learned prior to surgical alteration will only be eliminated/controlled through training. However, your dogs hormones will settle, and she wont be so emotional as she wont "cycle" anymore. Spaying will also stop an unwanted pregnacy from happening, and many reproductive diseases that can cause her extreme pain, and possibly a shorter life. Surgica;l alteration is almost ALWAYS the best choice. Good Luck!

I had my dog spayed at 6 months old and if it was suposed to calm her down then I wouldn't want to see her if she wasn't cause she is super hyper.. I dont think it calms them down much but they are suposed to calm down with age.

it is sugested, but it isnt always true, it depends on the breed. And it isnt so much that they calm down, its that they tend to be less protective.
