There seems to be a lot of confusion around on the affect of neutering on behaviour.

Neutering removes the hormones responsible for sexual behaviour i.e. trying to find a mate. It does not affect behaviour in general. Male dogs will probably stop humping everything, male cats will stop roaming, and of course female cats and dogs will not go into heat anymore.

The primary reason to neuter is to protect the animal's future health. It stops many forms of cancer such as testicular, prostate, ovarian and mammary from developing. It also prevents females from developing the potentially fatal condition pyometra.

Do have your dog spayed, but don't expect her to be any less hyper if she is a hyper dog. Neutering has more of a behavioural effect on adult male dogs, but even with them they may be no difference in general personality.
