When I tie my dog up outside a shop or school he goes beserk Why2007-11-25 2:54:48

When I walk the children to school I take our 6 month old westie aswell and tie him up outside the school gates as dogs are not allowed in the school. But as soon as I leave him he starts barking and screaming and the other day as I went to untie him he did a backwards flip! He just goes mad untill I am back in sight. He also does the same if he is tied up outside our village shop. People are starting to complain now, but I dont want to stop taking him as its a good 30min walk and when the children have gone to school I have to go straight to work so this is his morning walk. Can someone please help me?

Answers:

You need to train your dog to feel secure when left. Start by tying him up but not leaving him at all. When he is happy with that take one step away and so on. Eventually he will learn you leave but come back. Never rush it, work at his pace not yours. You are aiming to have no reaction from him at all, no panic or fear.

You could really do with seeing a trainer! Its much easier to work with one than from written instructions.

He doesnt like being left alone, probably thinks you might be leaving him and not coming back.

When you leave him, leave him a snack and when you come back give him a treat if he behaved good. He will get the point sooner or later that good behaviour is rewarded.

It would be interesting to know wether he is destructive at home when you leave him alone or not.
