When a dog is taken to a shelter, how long do they stay if they arent adopted
My best friend is worried about her dog that her mom took to the pound.. How long do they keep them there if no one adopts them? Do they really put them to sleep if no one does??
Answers:It depends on the shelter, but usually about 2 weeks before they are put to sleep. Most shelters evaluate dogs for adaptability, and if they are less adoptable then they will be put to sleep a little sooner than a dog that would be more adoptable.
It depends on the shelter. The best thing to do is to call and find out.
I've read that a lot of them only keep strays 3-5 days, though I suppose it depends on the place and how crowded it is. I'm not sure if the same goes for animals that are brought in by the owners or not. Her mother should have found a no kill shelter :(
Our local animal control where I have worked keeps unclaimed animals for approx.5 days. . more if their time falls on a holiday weekend.
Our humane society goes through everyday to pick out those dogs that they feel will be adopted out easily and those dogs can stay quite a bit longer though I am not sure on how they determine how long that will be.
Once a dog is surrendered as was your friends dog, they can go up for adoption immediately and thereby giving it a greater chance of adoption than if it were a stray dog that got picked up.
YES,those that are not adopted are put to sleep with a shot that takes effect IMMEDIATELY! ! ! ! It is VERY humane! !
Yes, they really do. Millions of animals are killed every year in shelters.
