When can I call the stray mine2007-11-25 2:54:04

I was at the vets office friday evening with my pet and a lady I used to work with brought in a stray chihuahua. They checked for a microchip and sure enough there's one but it was never registered. The dog had fleas, no collar and was FILTHY! We took him home because she couldn't have another dog. I am in love with this little dog and he gets along good with our 80lb mutt. I am not sure when I can call the dog "mine" because the dog does have a chip but it can't be traced to anyone. I think it was left on the road and I would hate for him to go back to the people that dumped him! I have emailed and called shelters in the area to see if anyone claimed him. When can I call him mine?

awwwww, good for you for rescuing the little guy. Call him yours now, stop trying to find the mean people who dumped him (if that was the case). Spending to $ to chip a dog a not registering it is daft. As far as I am concerned, you went far out of your way to find his owners. He is happy, and safe. He is your dog now. I would give it two weeks. At that point, you've done your best to find the owners, and can't be expected to try harder to find them than they tried to find him.

You have put the shelters on notice, if you dont hear back in a few weeks, I doubt the owners will ever step forward.

After 2 weeks of no one contacting you it's pretty safe for you to call the dog yours. It's wonderful that you were able to take in this poor pup. Good Luck

I owuld say with in a few weeks. At that point if the dogs owner was really looking for it they would have come forward by then.
