When can I feed my puppies with milk replacer2007-11-25 2:54:04

My dog had puppies on May 4th. But the puppies I think are crying cause there's barely any milk left in her. So when will it be okay to feed them with the milk replacer, like KMR or ESBILAC? And what is the best kind?

I have raised alot of puppies on bottles due to the mother not having alot of milk. I have also tried raising them on the Esbiliac...Its not given me good results. But I found a recipe for replacement milk that does wonders with puppies...here it is...

1 10oz. can of evaporated milk

3 oz. water

1 egg yolk

1 cup plain yogurt

1/2 Tbs karo syrup

Add all of the ingredients together and warm to body temp before feeding puppies. This mixture will be thick. But it is the best formula. I got this formula from a Leerburg breeder. If you choose, go ahead and do it now. What can it hurt? Don't worry, they will get all of the nutrients they need. This formula is loaded...and be sure to use a baby bottle rather than a pet bottle. If she is being fed good quality puppy food she should produce plenty of milk until the puppies are old enough to be weaned. They could be crying due to being cold, they can sometime cry for the 1st couple of minutes of sucking until the milk is let down. Unless the puppies are losing weight and look dehydrated don't use puppy milk replacer as it can cause upset tummies, only do it if completely necessary. My dog had puppies the same day and it doesn't look like she has alot of milk but if you listen to the puppies when they are feeding you should be able to hear when the milk starts to come.

It is very important to weigh your puppies. You dont say what kind of puppies you have but new borns dont drink much. If you bottle feed a newborn they only drink maybe an ounce at at a time. My puppies are from a large breed. I also feed evaporated milk in a baby bottle. You should also take them to the vet as soon as possible if you want to have their dew claws removed. I do this within 3 to our days. while at the vet check mom out too. she may have milk difficulties. If you weigh the puppies you will know if they are loosing weight
