When do dogs begin to grow longer fur

When do dogs begin to grow longer fur2007-11-25 2:54:43Answers:

Well I guess that would depend, I have a female husky and she is 7 but still doesn't have long hair. It's very dense, but not long, each dog can be different even within the same breed.

I assume around 10-12 weeks, if they are supposed to get longer fur.
It depends on the breed. My Alaskan Mals are born with 'puppy fur', short, dense, soft hair that falls out somewhere around 3 - 5 months and the full coat then comes in.

Some longer coated breeds, like Shih Tzu's, Long-Coated Dachshunds and others don't get their full coat until they are a year old, often longer.

Other breeds, like Komondors and Pulis have coats that take many years to fully come in.

Some never do.. It depends on the breed..
when they feel like it
All dogs will shed to one degree or another, there are no exceptions. But some wont grow a longer coat than what they already have.

It really does depend on the breed as to when the puppies will "blow" their puppy coat and grow in an adult one. There is no general rule of thumb. But on average I would guess that it would be anywhere from 4 months - 12 months. If you can be more specific to the breed we can give you a more specific answer.

It really depends on the breed. What type do you have?
