Hip dysplasia is usually detectable after age 2 but symptoms often don't show until later. An x-ray can diagnose it.

It could also be arthritis. Have a vet check him out. There is a lot that can be done to make him more comfortable. I doubt he's being a wimp. Dogs don't usually complain unless there is something going on.

My parents have a German Shepherd mix, who is about 7 yrs old, and has started getting hip problems. We assume it's hip dysplasia, although it hasn't been checked by a vet yet. She refuses to get up, she'd rather crawl to you. Only time she does get up, is when it's time for her walk. She'll walk real stiff for a bit, but will walk normally after a while.

Please have your dog's hips checked out.

No hes not a wimp he may be getting arthritis in his joints.Try put a little milk in his water.My mastif was doing this but since I did this it has stopped.

about seven i think, just keep giving him gentle exercise, not to much, and try buying him some dog treats that are especially for joints, the ones advertised on the telly with the oldie golden retriever and the puppy goldie.

You dont say how old your dog is but hip problems in any large breed dog can start at any age. Playing Frisbee may be one of your dogs best games to play but it can also damage his hips. You should get him into your vets to see what is going on. There is a big difference from a touch of arthritis and hip dyspepsia.
