It's a good idea to take him to the vet because sometimes there are things they can do or meds to make him more comfortable.

Your dog isn't being a wimp because dogs instinctively hide pain to not appear weak to predators. They have to hurt pretty bad to show it. Don't push him, but let him do what he wants. He will know his limits.

I have a 9 year old German Shepard mix. The vet recently diagnosed him with hip dysplasia. The proper course of treatment for my dog was a medication called Previcox. He's been on the medication for a couple of months now and his activity level is through the roof. You need to bring your dog to the vet and have some x-rays taken to determine what exactly the problem is. I have never hesitated in bringing my dog to the doctor and because of this he will not need any surgery to correct the dysplasia. While he will have this condition for the rest of his life, the medication will keep him pain free and slow the deterioration. Just like with humans, early detection of medical problems with dogs is key!
