When do i breed my 2 year old black lab after she comes into heat
It is generally not advisable to breed a litter of puppies from your dog unless you have gone through the entire rigamarole first.
How do you know that your dog is breeding quality? Do you show? Have you bought her from a registered breeder?
There are a whole heap of genetic testing and health testing that you need to undergo before breeding your dog - particularly with labs. Have you got her hips and elbows x-rayed? Have you got her eyes cleared? Has she passed all genetic and health tests?
then - what will you do if she has a complicated pregnancy and birth - are you willing to stay up all night while she is in labour and possibly rush to the vets for an emergency C- section?
Are you willing to hand feed a litter of puppies (and labs have big litters - sometimes 10 - 15) because mum has rejected them - feeding them every 2 hrs? Are you willing to microchip/vaccinate/worm/flea and provide ongoing support to your puppy buyers? Are you willing to screen your potential puppy buyers to find your pups the right home and always be willing to take your dogs back at any age should the family be unable to look after them?
It's a big responsibility - perhaps sit back and think about why you really want to breed! YOU WILL NOT MAKE MONEY!!!
After all - do you really want to produce dogs that may end up in the shelter one day?
I agree that you really shouldn't unless she's been proven to be a champ and perfect body structure- including having her eyes, hips, heart checked. We know a chocolate lab who had hip problems- very sad.
Before breeding your dog should first ask yourself a few questions. Does the dog posess all of the best traits of the breed? Does its personality warrant being passed on to its off spring. Has it had a complete health certificate from a vet for breeding, the tests would include std's, eye, hip, and knee certs to name a few. Different breeds require different tests, so check with your vet. Is the Dog show quality, is the male show quality and had all of the same exams and tests as the female. Can you afford teh Stud fee as well as vet bills for the mom and pups after birth. Are you prepared to bottle feed all of the pups every 2 hours if the mother turns her back on them. If she does you will also need to get a heat lamp to keep the pups warm and will have to wean them your self. You will have to get a cotton ball dipped in luke warm water and wipe the butt and genital areas of the pups in order to encourage them to potty. If the mother has complications you need to be sure you can afford to take her to an emergency vet to have a C-Section if required or you may lose her and all of her pups. I would suggest you buy the book "Breeding dogs for Dummies" it will help you with all you need to know and show you that breeding dogs correctly is not gonna make you alot of money, if that is what you think you are wrong. You have alot of expenses that go with breeding dogs.
If you do not have the answer to this simple question then you should not breed your dog. There are many things that can go wrong during a pregnancy or during whelping and YA should not be where research is done. Did you know there are libraries and book stores that have books with all the info you could possibly want or need on the subject of breeding? It is also a good idea to have a mentor to help while you are learning.
Leave the breeding to those that have better resources than YA and spay your dog.
i have a black lab and this is what the vet told me the 9th, 11th, and 13th day into her heat cycle.
but i wouldnt breed her!
