When does a German Shepards ears start to stand

When does a German Shepards ears start to stand2007-11-25 2:54:45Answers:

They can stand for the first time as early as four weeks. They tend to go up and down for a few weeks or even months. They should be up by six months when the dog is finished teething. If they aren't up on their own by then they probably won't be but that isn't definite. Taping is recommended at that point unless you don't care if they come up. If the ears don't stand on their own, it isn't recommended to breed the dog. This is a genetic issue and can easily be passed on. If your pup came from a breeder you can ask when the parents' ears stood and if they stood naturally. That wil help you get a better idea of when your pup's ears should be up.

BTW It's ShepHERD, not ShepARD. Sorry, that's a pet peeve of mine.

My white GSD's one ear stood at 6 months, had to wait another 4 months for the other one, LOL!

I don't know this for a fact about German Shepard's ears, but I can tell you about my German Shepard/Yellow Lab mix, which buy the way looks just like a shepard only a beatuiful golden color. Anyway I heard this some place a long time ago. If you have a breed of dog who you know ears are going to eventually stand straight up, leave the ears alone. What I mean by that is don't rub them, keep your hands away from them because it will make the ear weak and possibly make it fold instead of standing straight up. I got this dog when she was 3ish months old and the tops of her ears were folded down. I'm going to say from 4 to maybe 5 or 6 months the ears go up straight. And yes hers did go up some where in that time frame. Hopefully you have a vet, considering what it costs sometimes to bring your animal in to them, call your vet and ask them, I would hope they would know. Or call a German Shepard breeder. Good Luck with your dog, they are a wonderful breed.very smart, loyal, protective and sweet. MLJ
I have always had German Shepherds and there is no real time frame for the ears to stand. When your puppy is growing all the needed calcium is going into his bones and the last place is to the ears. You can give your pup a good vitamin for dogs like Pet Tabs Plus and this will help with all his calcium needs. Try not to play roughly with your dog's head and ears. I stay away from the ears while I am playing with my pups. To much stimulation in the ear area can weaken the ear cartilage. Most ears will go up on there own but I have seen others that were weak and never went up. This doesn't make your dog any less than a German Shepherd it just gives him a little character. If you have a real stubborn ear you can put tape (real sticky) on the inside bell of the ear. Clean the inside of the ear with alcohol and dry well before applying the tap. Your Vet can also help you by applying a brace to the ear and wrapping it carefully with tape. The ears aren't everything, if your dog is a wonderful companion, he doesn't have to have perfect ears. Teething time takes a toll on the ears also so after teething the ears usually will go up. Try the vitamins first.

Good luck with your pup.
