When does my new puppy need her shots and heartworm to2007-11-25 2:54:46

my puppy trixie has had some of them but no rabbies shot or heart worm shot how do i get it how much are they and when will she need all of the different shots please help me?

Rabies shots are given at 16 weeks. Many puppy shots require a booster shot 2 weeks later, so don't forget to get them or you will have to start over and it will cost you a lot more. Heartworm isn't controlled through a shot. You need a pill that she will take once a month to prevent it. Get this even if you worry about the cost. You will pay over $500 to treat it if she gets heartworm, and 2 months of having to be crated and leash walked only. Even then there is a high chance of dying. Just call your vet and follow their directions for shots and preventatives.

You should have gotten a card from the breeder that tells you what shots have been done and what shots are necessary.. Don't know how old the dog is, but you need shots at 6 weks, 8 wks, 12 wks and 16 wks with your rabies shot.. It's spring, when you go in for the shots the vet will talk to you about heartworm preventative and testing.

What I have learned is to find a place you trust or a referral from a friend and see if there is a check up clinic where they offer discount prices alot of vet ckinics do this in coordination with pet stores or city halls. This helps promote the rabies and regular shots for pets. Once you find a regular vet you can show him the present shots Trixie has had and he can better instruct you what Trixie will need and when and when will be the best affordable times so you can budget it out.

Whatever you do do not give your puppy a rabies shot @ 16 weeks old. A 100 lbs dog gets the same dosage as a 10 lbs pup!!!!!! Rabies is state regulated for travel and licensing but you do not have to get a license if the dog is under 1 year old, wait and get the rabies then. The only time I would recommend it sooner is if you live in an area with a high % of reported cases (rabies)
