But I'd love him even if he had no ears :) so standing / non standing ears doesn't matter to me

It's just a breed thing, because German Shepherds can have standing or nonstanding ears. Also he is a mixed breed so it depends on the breed he was mixed with.
They'll probably go up and stay up. He's very young.
I too have a shepherd mix and from experience with any of my shepherds, this happens. I was told at one point to not touch his/her ears during the first several months as they are growing and the ears need to build that muscle and keep it. The more you touch, the less likely they will stand up straight. One of my dogs has ears that dont stand up straight, but again, it could be the fact that she is not a purebred shepherd. Enjoy them no matter what!!! Don't ya love this breed?!! Very smart and super caring breed. I will warn you the barking is normal as they are very protective.
Ear leather or cartilage is what holds the ears erect. Since your dog is a mix, he just has thinner ear leather which allows the ear to sag. He's just made that way and it's perfect for him.
Not quite sure where people get the idea that you shouldn't touch the ears? Dogs love their ears to be rubbed! In fact, massaging the ears can help the ear muscle to work. The best thing to give your pup is a marrow bone to knaw on. The whole body works at the bone, but if you watch you'll see the ear muscles working as well!! Being a mix, you may end up with one ear down, but with both having been up, there's a very good chance they'll both be up again. They go up and down like yo-yo's when they're young and teething. A bone is your best bet.
This is common with a dog who has had his ears surgically cropped. My Dane's ears did the same thing. The reason I was told is that in a puppy, it's ears are very soft cartilage. As they grow, their bodies are robbed of calcium & the ears can fall.

Solution? My breeder had me take tampons (yes, I said tampons), take it out of the cover until you have just the cotton part. You then stick it on the inside of the ear (not deep inside the canal though) and then tape the ear. Leave it taped for awhile but make sure that you check frequently to make sure the ear doesn't become smelly because then that means it may have an infection. Don't be surprised if the ear falls a couple of time. Some dogs never have a problem, some have repeated problems. It's part of the growing process.
