When should i get my dog spayed2007-11-25 2:54:51

My vet was going to spay my pup at 4 months. He was going by weight and not the breed.

I talk with the breeder I got her from and she said to wait until 6 to 7 months The breed I have does not go into heat until around the 9th month. She knows of some that had health problems from being spayed too earily.

The best for the individual dog is to wait until maturity, after growth plates, and bone/frame, and hormones have reached maturity.

But preferably prior to the first heat (to prevent cancer of the female reproductive organs). The best for irresponsible pet owners, is as soon as possible to prevent more unwanted dogs.

I'd double check with the vet to see when they think it is right. Most dogs are around 6 months when they are considered to be spayed. Just try and do it before she goes into heat... less stress for you and her.
