When should puppies start wearing collars

When should puppies start wearing collars2007-11-25 2:54:05

I want to know as much information as I can about puppies, since we'll be fostering pretty soon. Someone said that they should start wearing breakaway collars at 4 weeks. Is this true?

Answers:

I really wouldn't suggest collars until they are weaned. With littermates it can be a hazard when playing. After 6 weeks definitely, make sure the puppies have plenty of room because they grow really fast. ID is a good thing too.

Thank-you for fostering puppies. Socialization is so important and it's a very hard job.

any age really

but when puppies are at play they sould not have on collars they like to rip at them, sometimes they don't, alot of breeders use cheap ribbons or collars to mark each pup in a litter so it really doesn't matter but no pup sould be left with another with a collar on because of the small chance one may decide to play with the others collars they normally don't

Puppies are so tiny and collars can hurt them. Have you checked out the local pet store. They have some great harnesses that suit smaller dogs. They wrap around the front legs and under the tummy and close on the back. The puppy will be more inclined to be walked with a harness than a collar or choker. Your training will be a lot more successful too.
