his tongue is almost totally black. Does that mean he has Chow in him too?
Answers:I have seen black on tongues of purebred Golden Retrievers, these dogs were shown in AKC shows in breed competition. Chows do have the spotted tongue, but you will see on other dogs from time to time that don't have Chow Chow in them. The only way you can tell for sure is to have a DNA test done on your dog. You can ask your vet about having that done. Good luck;^)
9 times out of 10 yes. chows are the few in the doggy family that are born with "spotted" tounges!
Suprisingly enough my own 10 month old dog is also part lab and german shephard. She has no characteristics of a german shephard. I saw her brother and sisters when I picked her up and they all looked like little shephards. As for your dog there could possibly be chow somewhere in his background.
There is a myth that chows are the only breeds with black tongues, and that if the tongue has black spots it must have chow heritage. This is not true. Black spots on the tongue in no way indicate whether the dog is a chow or a chow mix
unless that tongue is attached to a dog that looks like a chow. There are many, many breeds that can have black pigment on the tongue. Some can have large spots of black pigment, and sometimes they may have almost solid black
pigmentation on their tongues. So, if a black pigmented tongue is attached to a dog that does not look like a chow, then it is probably not a chow.
more then likely somewhere down the line he has some chow in him.
Most likely he is part chow and they didn't tell you. It happens a lot - chows have a bad reputation and some people and some shelters will call them something else instead. The black tongue is a dead giveaway.
probably as chows are the only dogs that have puprple or black tongues, i would highly recommend obedience training w/ this mixed breed. as german shepards and chows are watch dogs and as it gets older it is going to need to know who to obey.
not always true . black labs also have black pigmentation on their tongues.
