When would YOU start taking the puppy out for walks2007-11-25 2:54:08

My puppy is six weeks old. I just got her, she didn't have her shots yet. When would be a good time to start taking her out for walks?

Answers:

the week following her second shots..However, you can take her out for potty breaks in your own yard, or where no other dogs frequent..She should have her first shots now.

Also, too often overlooked, is the need for de-worming. This is very important for her health and proper growth.

Not until she has at least three shots.
I have been told not to take your dog for walks until fully immunized. I was told that they can catch too many things from other dogs and the ground if not fully immunized
She is a little to young yet. Infact you are not suppose to take them away from their mother until they are 7 or 8 weeks old! But when you take her to get her shots ask the vet, he/she will tell you if she is ready to go for walks yet. :)
Not until she is fully vaccinated - usually series of three shots (first shots then 2 sets of boosters.) Too hazardous for her otherwise, she could pick up bordatella or worse yet parvo.
when she gets her shots
Wait until she has had her shots to prevent her from picking something up while out and about. As far as walking after that will depend on what breed she is. Smaller breeds should take short walks while a larger breed dog can go longer. Be careful about large to extra large breeds that are still developing bones-such as Great Danes. They can go for walks but you have to make sure it's a slower pace and and not a huge distance. Walking a puppy is a great time to teach sit/stay and come commands also. Have some treats with you and ask the puppy to sit-bringing the head back will force her to sit as she will follow the treat. Once she can sit have her stay and you walk backwards a little at a time while she stays put. Reward with treat and then sit/stay and come-reward with treat. The sooner she can master these simple commands the more well behaved she will be and safer if she would happen to get off leash. You can also build on these commands to tricks and more complicated commands.
1 week after final shot, try to leash train her during the next few weeks so that she is ready to go, also spend this time at home getting her into a routine and training her, plenty of time for walks.i know its exciting, but for now a pee or a poo out the back garden is all she can have, also if friend come over with pets, isolate her from them and have some wipes for them to freshen their hands before touching her, also if you come in contact with other dogs during the day, make sure to wash up first before touching her, dont wana pass on any bugs, worming is required also, every 2 weeks until she is 16 weeks old, then at 20 weeks and every 2 - 3 mths there after.
