When/how to start using a doggy door2007-11-25 2:54:09

I have a 6 month old Boxer who is currently crate trained. I want to get a doggy door and start having him use that while we are not home for short periods of time. As far as potty training goes, he has an accident every now & again, but if i leave the door open, he will go out on his own.

How do i know if its the right time to start with the doggy door? What do i need to consider before doing this?

Hello, anytime is OK to train now beings he's 6 months - just make sure the doggie door will always be big enough - he ain't done growing yet :) we did a dog food or tiny treat trail to the doggie door & put some dog food or treat outside the door ( far enough away they had to stick their heads out the door & go out the door to get it ) to train them to use the door..fair warning tho..what goes out the door does come back in..as can other wild critters like skunks, etc when your not watching or around to watch..Take Care :)

right now would be the perfect time to start training him and be patient they are good dogs and great about not using the bathroom in the house good luck

It is not too early to start teaching your dog to go outside. I think you will find that once he gets the idea both you and your dog will be much happier. Him because he has the freedom to come and go as he pleases, and you because you don't have to clean up aftern him.

All answers so far a right on, especially the answer regarding growth.

As an aside, once your puppy gets used to the door ,you and him will be happier for it. A doggy- door is a great invention. Just make sure you close it off at night as raccoons,etc. can get in your house just as easily as you dog can.
