At the pound or from a shepherd rescue. If you buy a pure bred pup for under $200, it most likely is not from a responsible/good breeder and will be more likely to have been inbred and have health issues.

(Before all the backyard breeders jump on me, that is a LOW price for a healthy pure bred, you have to agree!)

You're kidding, right? You're not going to find a "good" German Shepherd for anywhere near $200. And you do need to get a good one if you want a good, stable temperament as well as a dog who's breeder tests all his breeding stock for hip and elbow dysplasia, tests eyes and breeds only the best examples of the breed. There's a plethora of back yard breeders breeding these dogs and you want to stay far away from them.

Forget the good bloodline bit and go to http://www.petfinder.com to adopt a German Shepherd. The adoption fees are usually around $150 so it'll fit your budget. You will never find a quality German Shepherd with good bloodlines, tested for genetics etc. for under $200.

If you can't afford more than $200 for a dog - how are you going to afford heartworm medication, vaccinations, check ups, quality dog food etc.? Having a dog costs a lot of money - can you afford it?

Good luck with that, $200.00 doesn't buy you much. You might be able to get that breed but I doubt that you will get the bloodlines and the good with kids part.

Do NOT adopt a dog (or any animal for that matter) if you can't even afford $200. It doesn't cost anything to buy an animal; it's the maintenance that's the killer!
