Where can i get low cost puppies2007-11-25 2:54:20

My mom, my sister, and I are considering getting a puppy it has to be female and we are leaning towards a mini or toy poodle. I found plenty of males through shelters but we need a female. My mom doesnt want to have to pay for it yet every where i search i can only find girl poodles from breeders that cost a lot of money. Anyone who is familiar with the harleysville/philadelphia area and knows of good shelters os spcas let me know. It doesnt have to be a poodle, we are just hoping to go to one of the places and play with the puppies and see how they are also how much they shed. thanks.

ps. a young dog would be great.

can i ask why it needs to be a female? You can not legally breed a dog from any shelter, and many will be fixed before you can even take them home...

I'm not familiar with the shelters in your area but I know the ones in mine have a wish list. If they get a dog that matches the request someone put in on their wish list they call and give that person the first chance at adopting.

You may want to inquire if that is an option in your area shelters. My Mom got the best West Highland Terrier this way.

low cost puppies end up with high cost vet bills. Most AKC breeders will sell you a dog for around $200 on contract.

I'm surprised you can't find "Free to Good Home" ads in your local paper. You might also try "Googling" for Rescue organizations in your area if you're willing to take on an animal with "special needs", e.g., who may have been abused. Also, try www.freecycle.org/ and find a freecycle group in your area and post your doggie "Need".
