Where do I go to get my dogs ears clipped2007-11-25 2:54:23

We have a pit bull who we love, and just got another. We want to get his ears clipped, but do we go to a vet for this or someplace else?

Only a vet can legally perform this procedure, which needs to be done under general anesthesia, and not all vets will perform this surgury. This is a controversial procedure, done mainly to enhance the appearance of the animal for the OWNER. I used to show APBT's, and show judges at that time wouldn't give one a second glance if it didn't have cropped ears, so I had my show dogs cropped. My vet does an excellent job, and I will not say that it's cruel, anymore so than spaying or neutering, which also involve general anesthesia and cutting into a sensitive part of a dog's anatomy, in the case of a male, and actually cutting into the abdominal cavity of a female, which is technically far riskier than cutting off part of an ear. My vet used a laser, so there was little scarring or scabbing, and the pups honestly didn't seem the least bit bothered once they woke up from the anesthesia, aside from some itching while healing was taking place, just as any healing cut will itch. It was more of a hassle for ME, having to keep them from playing too rough or running through the bushes while the ears were still healing, than for them, and it can be an expensive procedure. Since it is not necessary, and doesn't actually benefit the dog, if you're not going to show the dog, why bother? I've gotten used to the look of natural Pit Bull ears, and since I'm not involved in dog shows anymore, I just don't see the need in forking out that money that can be better spent on something else.

Yea the vet will do it for you but make sure they have lots of experience or they can mess them up good.

Why would you want to crop the ears anyways? APBTs are adorable with their natural ears. In my opinion, if they have floppy ears, they're suppose to have floppy ears. Same goes for tails...if they have a tail, let them keep it.
