German shepherd is the smartest all around dog, with the border collie right behind it. The border collie seems to learn to follow commands a little quicker but any german shepherd owner will tell you that there dog seems to know how to read minds. It is absolutely amazing how german shepherds catch on to your behaviors and know what you are going to do next. I have owned and trained german shepherds in agillity and protection for the last 10 years as well as some other dogs including bull mastiffs, rotwiellers, border collies, and a few others. I currently own a male german shepherd and a female bull mastiff and let me tell you, bull mastiff is definately not on this list. Its not that they arent smart but they are extremly stubborn. Here is a few examples of what my germen shepherd does when I say "read you mind" when talking about the german shepherd. Before I take my dog out to use the bathroom I write down the time on a piece of paper, as soon as Kaiser (my german shepherd) sees me writting on the piece of paper he goes to the back door. When I grab a hat out of my closet, he goes inside his crate and lies down because he knows im leaving the house. When I go to the pantry to grab a garbage bag to replace the one I am going to take out he once again goes to the back door and waits because he knows i am going to go out to throw away the trash. I still havent figured out what i do to tip him off on this one but when I get up to take him for a walk he knows it before I even leave me room, he gets excited and waits for me by the front door. These are just a few of the things that he has picked up completely on his own without any training from me, I always say that german shepherds are so smart that they make me look like I know what im doing when it comes to dog training. Yes, gsd are in the hearding group not the working group.
Smartest or best trainable? Border Collie, German Shepard's, Shelties and basically any working class dog. Me my opinion Great Danes are basically pretty smart loving and goofy!
Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Though as opinion goes, any working class breed. And with said, any breed is only as good as the owner that trains her/him.
