If you pick a dog based on what you really want the dog to do with you, rather than because it's cute or a popular breed, you really will have better luck getting your best friend.

I have a preference for the toy dog breeds...pekingese, maltese,chihuahua etc but I know larger dogs are also great like the labs,golden retrievers etc. A great balance will be a beagle. Remember there is a great amount of responsibility with owning a dog. Good Luck !

Your perfect "best friend" will depend on what type of dog you are looking for. Do you want an inside or outside dog? Playful or calm? Good with kids? Protector? My favorite inside dogs are bassets and dachshunds, they are small, playful, good with kids but dachshunds can be a little protective and a bit temperamental at times, they used to be hunting dogs. My favorite outside dogs are labs, I currently have three! They are very playful, good with kids (usually), easy to train. Retrievers and German shepherds are also really good dogs. My recommendation to you would be to talk to a local vet or animal shelter and find out what type of dog would best fit your lifestyle. every situation is different, just like every dog, even if they are the same breed. boxers are extremely high energy mostly but i have seen them very very lazy as well. but to answer you're question i like german shepherds. they enjoy the company of people and are very very smart. they also fit my lifestyle well. i enjoy being outside with my dog and playing ball and running around and a shepherd is great for that. they have very good energy for lots of play, some people may not like that much energy. they are also very loyal and you have to admit, if you were thinking of coming into my house without my permission, you'd think twice with a 70 pound, or larger, dog staring you in the face.

I have owned chow chows for many years. Their not for everyone (as with any breed) but they are wonderful loyal dogs, protective, calm, content to lay at your feet and don't need to be pampered or cuddled every second. They are very independent...almost cat like. Less likely then most breeds to develop seperation anxiety, usually don't dig and are usually not destructive. Plus, when you pet them its like loving a true teddy bear.
