Nature made Australia unique-Australian Quarantine Inspection Services keeps it that way.

Answers:

I have actually been trained in the use of detector dogs in Australia.

contrary to the belief that customs only uses a few types of dogs - any type of dog can be used..

but some breeds prefered than others for various reasons. this includes personality and what they respond to in training.

At Sydney Airport, they use -

beagles,

spaniels (a few breeds)

cattle dogs

labradors

terriers (a few breeds)

sheepdogs

and even mixed mutts.

actually, a lot of the dogs they use come from shelters or are simply donated. breed doesnt really matter.

beagles and spaniels (though ive seen the cattle dogs too) however, are usually the ones used in public. This has more to do with personality, and the fact that they dont seem as intimidating as other breeds. It also has a lot to do with public relations and media. beagles are typically used because they are easily identified by the general public. media campaigns are the main way customs stops violations, not the actual dog searches.
