Which dog food is better
My veterinarian has always reccomended IAMS dog food for my dogs. But since I've been doing my own online research, I've heard a lot about Canidae dog food being the best. I've also read that making your own dog food is the right way to go. I looked up a recipe and was wondering which is really best. The dog food recipie I got, says you need a balanced diet of 40 % meat, 30% starch, & 30% veggies. It said I can make different mixtures including : carrots, garlic, rice, eggs, liver, ground turkey, beef, ect. for my dogs to ensure they are getting all the propper nutrients. So would I be better off preparing this for them or giving them Canidae dog food?
Answers:First, kudos to you for doing your research. Vets get about a week of nutrition training which is sponsored by one of these major companies. Basically, DO NOT trust a vet to know about nutrition. Very rarely do they know anything or do their own research.
Second, it is very easy and almost always less expensive to prepare a home cooked meal for your dogs. Canidae is a respectable kibble, but remember that ALL kibble has fillers and preservatives which are bad for your dog. It's hard to get around this because of a kibble consistency. That aside, with a home cooked meal, you KNOW for certain what your dog is eating. My recommendation would be to experiment and formulate your own dog food. Too much meat = runny poo. Therefore you cut out a lot of meat. Your dog's signs will let you know if you're going in the right direction. I'm not sure of the size of your dog, but you will do a great job if you buy a couple pounds of ground beef/chicken/turkey, cook it all up, and make a stew with all the vegetables and organ meats. Dogs need the organ meats, so even though they stink, don't leave them out! You may want to add some brown rice to the diet as well, although it's not necessary. In fact, there is a huge debate on whether vegetables/fruits are necessary. In any event, they won't hurt but feed them sparingly. If you dog likes them, go for it! Eggs are also good to add, and you can give your dog his eggs raw, scrambled, hard boiled, doesn't matter. Don't worry about bacteria if you feed things raw, in fact a RAW diet is often better than a home cooked diet. Dogs have super powerful digestive enzymes that kill all this bacteria.
