commercial dog food is a better choice for most first time dog owners. canidae is not a bad choice, but my dog is very fussy and refused to eat it. i am currently feeding timberwilf organic. try to find commercial food that are holistic, and if you can afford it, organic.

the most important thing, however, is still whether your dog is healthy

Canidae is recommended a lot by people I know. I have been going to holistic vets to solve my dog's constant lick granuloma.one wants to cook what sounds like the one you describe, except choose a meat. My friend uses it and crockpot cooks it. My other vet had me feed raw hamburger with Urban Mix (looks like a large bag of wheat flour and smells good) with sunflower oil and water. My dogs never looked better and I still feed this to one dog, as he is great on this. I feel this is easier than cooking the whole meal from scratch. We're testing the other dog for possible food allergies, otherwise I'd have her on this, still. As a spayed dog, she tends to gain weight easily. The Urban Wolf diet made her trim. I added raw carrots, green beans, or pumpkin to my dogs' food when they ate kibble, which helped. An agility friend feeds Canidae mixed with canned pumpkin, and she has lean active dogs. (Also shows them in Conformation.) So, either choice is good, choose what fits in your life.

It is not always best to make your dogs it's own food. It is good sometimes, but not always and I'll tell you why. Foods like Canidae and Innova and other top quality dog foods add plenty of vitamins and minerals and supplements to your dogs diet that aren't naturally occurring in food you will make for your dog. That is the primary reason I would feed my dog a premade kibble. Unless you plan on becoming a dietary specialist and preparing your own food with all types od added vitamins and minerals, I'd say feed a quality food. They are every bit as healthy as anything you can make your dogs, plus it more convenient for you. But feel free to treat him to a protein and carb that you make yourself once in a while. Just be careful, he may not want to go back to dry food if you do this.

i cook the food myself after reading about agreat recipe. i usually cook heaps of it and just store it in a few boxes and freeze it. i take it out as needed & my pups love it.
