Which dog is right for me
A few breeds that might work for you are: maltese, bichon frise, dandie dinmont terrier or french bulldog.
Like I said though, your best bet is to meet the dog and see if you click.
I have a daschund. He is all you say you want in a dog, but he can't stand too much children because of the ears and the tail and perhaps, because he is not used to be with children.
I don't understand quite well what you mean with the dog defending itself. If the dog is attacked, may be he defends itself or not, depending in its personality. If you want a dog to defend you and your children, a German Sheppard is perfect. But is not so easy to travel with, unless you travel by car, not plane.
Look for a book of breeds and there you'll find specific information. I did a research also to buy mine. I wanted a male, without odor (some breeds don't have odor), short hair (not to pay hairstylist and easy to bath), black/tan and excellent personality.
Good luck!
your asking a lot in a dog...you cant predict an animals behavior...i would say a chiwawah or pomeranian...maybe a toy poodle...but all dogs are going to bark..small dogs are very possesive of their owner and pomeranians especially bark at anyone who gos near you.
a Pomerania there really good with kids i have one but shes mixed
The best dog for this in my thoughts would be a Lab...But you dont want it to be over 20 lbs.so i would say to have a toy beagle.. thats my thought but Labs are great dogs...
I don't usually recommend breeds but i think the Basenji is for you.
