We live on the lake and are looking to get a puppy or young dog that LOVES swimming and playing in the water. Does anyone have the answer to which we need to look? I have heard that Labs and retreivers but was wondering if there are other.Thanks
Answers:Standard poodles, Protugese water dogs, and especially NEWFOUNDLANDS (oh my God it is the most hilarious thing ever to be forcefully dragged to shore by one of these dogs) . It varies from dog to dog but most in working/herding or sporting groups enjoy the water.
Labs, retrievers. These ones are the best at swimming and love water.
There are also Portuguese Water dogs (sort of like an enormous poodle).
Smaller dogs, such as many in the toy category do not do well in water.
Golden Retrievers love the water and swimming. I have to close the gates to my pool to make sure mine don't sneak back into the pool with out my being there. Labs are great water dogs so are Poodles and some Spaniels.

Beagles like the water cause they are also used as hunting dogs. Goldens, Labs, Portuguese Water Dogs, German Sheperds, Ive seen some standered poodles swimming
labs and also austrailian shepards also like the water
My grandfather's german shepherd will jump in the pond even in the winter. German shepherds love water and are great pets if you train them well.
