Ok I think a Brittney Spaniel they look so cute and I would name her Brittney if it was a girl.
brittany-they are more docile and family friendly
neither, at least not with small children-spaniels have a tenancy to be "nippy" with little kids--your best choice for all around best family dog is the beagle-look it up in Eukanuba's breed selector-under medium breeds
The Brittany is slightly more energetic and friendlier towards strangers.
The English Springer Spaniel is slightly friendlier towards other pets, slightly easier to train, a little more protective, and it requires more grooming.
They are about equal in affection for owners and playfulness.
Neither are good for a family with small children. Both require lots of training and a dedicated owner to keep them from having seperation anxiety (which most spaniels are prone to since they tend to be nervous/anxious dogs). They should never be left alone with children as they can be nippy (even when they are good with kids). They both need lots of exercise and training.
I have a brittany spaniel and love him! He tolerates children and is for the great with the kids my mom looks after, but he is always under supervision. Any little sign that he doesn't want to be bothered and he is removed from the situation immediately so that the tension does not rise.
With older kids (teens), both breeds are fine. Still they have a tendency to be nippy, but trained properly, they are great dogs. I don't know exactly how english springer spaniels are as companions, but my brittany is great as a companion. He loves to be where we are and he enjoys cuddling.
