Which is a better family pet (last time i will ask this), a beagle or a cavalier king charles spanie2007-11-25 2:55:34

i know that i have asked a lot of " which is better" questions, but this is the last time i will ask them about dog breeds.

i like the beagle, i hear they are stubborn , but they are excellent with kids and that is the main thing i am loooking for, but the cavalier is smaller and all they want is to please you.

I've never owned a cavalier king charles spaniel before, however I'm the owner of a 11 week old beagle puppy. She is a handful, and you haven't seen naughty until you own a beagle lol. Alot of people think they are to hard to train and bark alot etc but I think it depends on the dogs personality. The only time my puppy howls is when she is in her carrier when we are in the car. Otherwise there is not a peep out of her. Food is going to be your best friend as it is the perfect bribe when training. My puppy picked up the command 'sit' within one night (with the help of some liver treats).

Also I've found if left to their own devices they can cause damage (digging up the garden, spreading your bin contents throughout the house, chewing up anything within her reach). If your pup will be alone for the majority of the day without human or another dogs company, you will really need to "beagle proof" your house/garden and give it alot of exercise. Secure fencing is a must!

P.S. You will also need the patience of a saint (LOL).

CAVALIER much much better... beagles are bred to hunt, they bark and they like to run off and follow their noses.. hard to train.. which is why you really never see a beagle competing in obedience classes... cute-yes, but cuddly pet..nope
