Visit some breeders and get their advice, as they will probably advise you on which dog is best, and also know the father and mother of the pups! So know what the pups temperament will be like!

or small dogs ur prob best off with a west highland terrier as a lot of small dogs can nip a lot if theyr not happy.

Labs are great, but you need to becareful that you get one with a calm tempermant. Maybe even going to your local shelter?! You might find the perfect dog with the best attitude!

i usually suggest shelter mutts but since you need certain kind of personalty i would recommend a golden, a lab or a German Shepperd but remember they must be trained

If i were you i would forget the puppy idea and go for an older/adult rescue dog that is already established in its self. If you get a puppy, you got to remember about toilet training and chewing things etc. An older, yet playful dog may be a better solution. You need something placid and laid back, which you won't know until the puppy gets older, and not something to big just in case the children get knocked over. I would recommend something like a springer/cocker spaniel (stay away from the red ones though!)
