There are wonderful organizations who can help you in your search. Please contact Helping hands or even the United Cerebral Palsy Association for help in guiding you to find a perfect dog for you and your family. Your doctor may even help with getting you in touch with some other associations.

Personally I would go for a lab or retriever, yes they are a little bigger but you will find with smaller dogs that they can be very highly strung and very demanding as strong willed unless you get a sausage dog which are pretty laid back from what I have seen!
Maybe you should go down to your local pet shop or library and read up on different dogs and their nature (which you should do before getting any pet)
Dogs are great companions and I am sure which ever dog you decide to get both your children will love it and their love will be returned :O)
corgis... they are small, happy, friendly little dogs and not to much hard work either
I would suggest going down to your local shelter or Humane Society and talking to the staff regarding which dogs they have available that might be good for your situation.
I would personally suggest getting a "mutt-a-gree" rather than a pure-bred dog, as they tend to be more laid back. Also, I would suggest getting a 2 or so year old dog instead of a puppy, as puppies need a lot of time, attention and training - and there are no guarantees as to what their personalities will be like.
