Which is the best dog breed for handicapped children
Dogs do such a lot of good for us humans, yet they still get so exploited by some!
I wish you lots of luck
Temperament wise Labradors and Golden Retrievers have a good reputation but they are big dogs and can be boisterous.
I suggest that you need a smaller breed but the terriers are often also rather boisterous. In this size category I would recommend a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They are a good size, quite entertaining without being over the top and in 15 years of being a Vet I have yet to meet a nasty one. However like most pedigree breeds they are prone to a few health problems, the main one being heart conditions in later life and this can make them relatively expensive to own. If you get any dog I would recommend Pet Health Insurance to guard against this and make sure it is a policy that covers the whole life of the dog.
If it's not essential that you have a pedigree then a rescue dog might fit the bill. There are huge numbers of Rescue Organisations doing excellent work but you could try Dogs鈥?Trust. They will put a big effort in trying to make sure you get the right dog for your situation.

This will sound unlikely but if it doesn't have to be a puppy then consider a greyhound - Dogs' Trust have loads of ex-racing dogs in need of a good home and despite their size they are very docile dogs generally and don't need as much exercise as you think.
