i would say a spaniel,they have a good all round temperament,and they don't grow to a very big size.
A Miniature or Standard Schnauzer. This dog is very protective, hard headed but once it learns who the TOP DOG is it is easy to train, very loving, smart, and very tough. This dog is very very loyal
I agree with those that recommend the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Not only are they small but their temperment make them perfect for therapy. They don't require too much exercise & love nothing more than a cuddle.
My mom got her sister (who is mentally handicapped) a Pomeranian/Pekinese. She is one of the nicest dogs I've ever met. She could fit in a regular sized purse, and she never gets tired. She's a big ball of energy. You kids would LOVE one. Besides mixbreeds tend to be cheaper in purebreeds.

I am buying my little girl who has Aspergers Syndrome a Bichon Frise (it will be a pet for the whole family).
They are not too big (grown to about 11 inches tall 3 - 5kg), get on well with children, adults and other animals too.
They do not moult so are ideal for people with allergies.
They are not "yappy" dogs as some smaller breeds are and not too hyper either.
They are friendly and loving dogs too.
The only down fall is they do need daily grooming.
