Which kind of dog is the most well-behaved
I would have to agree with the other person on here who recommended Golden Retrievers. They are natural family dogs. They get along well with others dogs and children and are usually very laid back and easy to train. However, they do have long hair that will need to be brushed at least once a week.
I have found that the shedding of long-haired dogs is actually easier to clean up after than shorthaired breeds. I have had Labs (which are also very obedient) as well as Golden Retrievers. The Labs hairs sort of stick in fabrics like needles and are harder to get out whereas the Golden Retriever hair was long and fluffy and easy to vacuum.
I think the best solution for you would be a LabraDoodle. They are a mixed breed of a Labrador and Poodle, so they have soft fluffy hair, but they do not shed. They come in shades of black, brown and yellow and they also have a miniature version. They have the great temperment of a Lab, and the low-maintenence hair of a Poodle. Plus, although you must NEVER base your decision on looks, I think they are adorable.
If you want a smaller breed and don't like the LabraDoodle, I would recommend either a Miniature Schnauzer or a West Highland White Terrier. Neither shed, both stay relatively small and usually have a good temperment.
Also, just a tip to a first time owner, be sure to have some money set aside for unexpected expenses for your dog. I have seen countless people say they can't afford vet bills and so they ask questions on here about their dogs when in reality, they require immediate medical attention. Vet treatment is very expensive and you never know what will come up.
