Be sure to do plenty of research once you narrow down your top few breeds. I would recommend going to a book store and checking out/buying a few books on the specific breeds you are considering. It may be hard to find a book specifically for LabraDoodles, as they are not accepted by the AKC, but just look at books on Poodles and Labs. Once you make your decision, talk to multiple breeders and tell them specifically what you're looking for in a dog, your lifestyle, and when will be the best time to get your new puppy.

The most well-behaved dog is the one you commit yourself to. Dogs cannot train themselves. They need their humans to raise them and teach them what is right and wrong. Dogs get dirty and messy...there is no way around that. Truth is, all animals and pets get dirty, so if you do not want that, do not get a pet...as simple as that!
You can train a dog to stay away from a lake on a walk or a mud puddle at the dog park, which I have trained my dogs to do, but that is all about a proper voice recall, not a dog's tendency to get muddy.
You want to find the dog that is right for you, and that takes a lot of research and planning.
There are dog breeds which are smart by nature, and some that are more independent and thus, stubborn. Hounds and some of the Working breeds are very independent. Retrievers are some of the most willing to please and thus easy to train breeds ever.
But all dogs need leadership and training, no matter what.
All dogs can be messy and dirty.
If you have a shorthaired dog that you train (and keep training) it will be easier to keep clean.
