Collies are a little more protective and territorial. They also get jealous. Keep in mind that a Collie has a lot of fur, and keeping that under control would be a hassle.

Golden Retrievers are very friendly... there is a reason why they are the second most popular breed (after Labradors). Each dog will have their own personality ~ usually they are very friendly, but there are exceptions. My parents have a pure bred Golden Retriever who is wary of strangers. He has a big bark when the UPS man comes to the door, but he is shy if approached by a stranger (the same is true for my pure bred Chocolate Labrador who I rescued from an abusive situation). Personally, I don't think that a Golden would be TOO friendly. If you get a puppy and teach him or her what sort of behavior you expect from an early age, you should have the ideal dog.

Me personally i would go with a collie but that is just me it all depends on what you want the dog for. If you want a family dog that will protect then they are both perfect. Collies usually are a little more calmer with small children but Retrievers are great also.
