Which one would be a better hunting dog a black lab or jack russell
at fox hunting
Answers:Labradors were bred to retrieve water fowl shot by a hunter -- they wouldn't be very good at going after a fox. It's not their job.
JRTs were bred to kill vermin, go to ground, down holes, get the critter. So if you were after a fox, the JRT would be the better choice.
From the Parson (Jack) Russell Standard:
"The Parson Russell Terrier was developed in the south of England in the 1800鈥檚 as a white terrier to work European red fox both above and below ground. The terrier was named for the Reverend John Russell, whose terriers trailed hounds and bolted foxes from dens so the hunt could ride on."
Neither, a Beagle, or a Bassett Hound
Neither one was bred to hunt fox.
Jacks were bred for small furry game like rats and rodents.
Labs were bred for either water retreival or upland birds.
Most likely either one would work but if you are hunting on horseback the lab might tire out to easily.
jack russell
Ok depending on what you are hunting I would go with a combination flusher and retriever (springer spanel and a lab)
neither labradors are retreiveing dogs and russels are working dogs...a hunting dog would be best e.g beagle foxhound atc...
A blk lab would be better their know for it.
I am not a hunter, but my father-in-law is. He has a Visla and says it is THE BEST hunting dog on earth. I have owned a chocolate lab and a jack russell. Terriers don't generally make great hunting dogs unless you are hunting animals that burrow. My Jack Russell loved to dig. He was also very energetic and would never be able to simmer down long enough to go on a hunt. A lab is a retriever which means that he will probably point and also retrieve for you. My father-in-law owned two goldens and said they were wonderful hunting companions. I had to give my jrt to a farmer with a lot of land because he was just to wild all the time and dug under the fence. Hope this helped.
Depends on what you are hunting.
Labs were not bred to hunt fox. They were bred to retrieve. JRTs are terriers that were bred to "go to ground".go into tunnels after game (vermin of any kind that tunnels or lives in dens). The foxhounds were bred to chase the fox cross country but when the fox "went to ground" the terriers were sent in (JRT's, Fells, Borders, Patterdales etc) to either bolt the fox from the tunnel or dispatch them underground. Sometimes more than one terrier was used.
