There is no reason to ship pups - Period. (My opinion). You can find whatever breed you want within driving distance either at a shelter, rescue or reputable breeder.
If you had to ship a dog or pup because you were moving, you would do it on an airline after a lot of research.
If you need to ship a puppy, use an airline. Make sure it is a non-stop flight.

If possible, I would recommend driving to get the puppy, it seems a bit easier on them. I had the option of getting my puppy shipped for $250, or driving 5 hrs one way and 5 hrs back to pick her up, I chose the driving, even though it took up my entire day to do it. (Don't worry, the puppy won't be scarred for life from getting shipped either, but it may scare it and stress it out a bit more during the transition period from one owner to the other.)
Airlines. I know southwest does it. If he's small enough to fit inside with you in a small kennel it's only about $80 but if they have to rid in the cargo area then it's about $200 or more. Also they can only fly if where you are going is at least 85 degrees high and no lower than 45 degrees. I think this only applies for dogs in the cargo area.
