Who is smarter- herding dogs, or hunting dogs2007-11-25 2:55:12
Odd trivia--somewhere I saw it said that poodles are the most "intelligent" dogs. ?! I wonder how they test for dog IQ?
Although Retrievers, Pointers, etc. can be taught a great deal, there is no doubt in my mind that herders are smarter. Australian Cattle Dogs (Blue Heelers) are one of the smartest breeds on earth, bossy as they may be! Labs, on the other hand, are, in my opinion (my father was a trainer as I was growing up), some of THE DUMBEST canines out there=)
Well i think it depends on the dog. Yes some breeds may be smarter then others but i have had smart and not so smart dogs of many breeds. Although the Border Collie was recently found to be the smartest dog on earth mine has been hit by cars 3 times and doesn't know and absolutely refuses to learn any tricks.:)
Well, herding dogs have to respond to a greater range of commands, whereas a hunting dog just has to follow natural instinct to chase game, but then it has to be trained how to respond once the game is got. I have owned both hunting and herding dogs, and i would have to say out of those 2 generic groups, herding dogs are smarter, but the most intelligent dog i have ever owned was, the doberman.
