Why are Choke chains considered necessary for big dogs
First, if used incorrectly, they can hurt (or in some extreme cases, even kill) a dog. I can't really decide if the owners think it gives them more control (which is really just a psychological thing anyway). Sometimes owners use these to make their dogs seem mean.
It's just insane and no excuse for lack of training. I applaud you for training your dogs and having such a positive relationship with them!

Hi there,
I personally think it is up to you what you use, nylon collars are good for a lot of dogs. For a dog that walks nicely on a lead I don't see a need for a choke chain, but I also think there dangerous of a dog pulls a lot because the can over tighten and cause permanent damage to there neck. I use a martingale (limited nylon slip collar) on my Weimaraner for training and a gentle leader harness on him for walking because he likes to pull. I use a snake chain (choke chain) on my Keeshond for walking and training. But that is what they work well with.
I have had large dogs for many, many years & I've never owned a choker chain & never would.
Some people get the idea that they are necessary. Plus they are also pretty cheap. Dog can't chew it and it will last forever. But people tend to think that you use a choke to gain control. They don't realize that it helps to build the dog's neck and shoulder muscles stronger and they pull even more.
